Abstract

Using povidone iodine 10% as a strong anti-mycobacterium in incision wound treatment is common. However, it has a toxic effect on body cell and it can’t create proper environment for cell regeneration. Indian Pennywort (Centella asiatica L. Urban) is one of the herb that is useful for healing wound because it has a lot of advantages like anti-mycobacterium, increasing fibroblast cell proliferation and collagen synthesis. To date, the differences between Indian Pennywort extract and povidone iodine 10% in incision wound healing, were unknown. This research using a true-experimental design by 27 sampels, 3 months old-male guinea pigs, divided into three groups, 1 control group and 2 treatment groups. This classification was done randomizely. Independent variable were Indian Pennywort extract and 10% povidone iodine while dependent variable were inflammatory phase (erythema, oedema, wound fluid) and proliferation phase (wound granulation and wound side) were assessed in the 2nd, 4th, and 6th days. Data was obtained from the observation of the signs both of inflammatory and proliferation phase. One-Way ANOVA statistical test used to analyze erythema and oedema inflammatory phase. While wound fluid, wound granulation, and wound side using non-parametric statistical test namely Kruskal- Wallis. Result showed that there were differences between Indian Pennywort extract and 10% povidone iodine group in erythema (p= 0.004), wound granulation (p= 0.028) and wound side (p= 0.006) at 2th day, erythema (p= 0.001), wound granulation (p= 0.033) and wound side (p= 0.007) at 4th day, erythema (p=-), wound granulation (p= 0.018) and wound side (p= 0.005) at 6th day. In conclusion, Indian Pennywort extract was proven to be more effective in accelerated incision healing, increasing fibroblast cell proliferation and reduce any infection risks. For further research, microscopic observation of collagen, PMNcell (neutrophile), MN-cell (lymphocyte and monocyte) is needed.
