Abstract

The number of asthma sufferers in the world reaches 300 million people, and will increase to 400 million in 2025. Bad asthma control level remains a major problem in patients with asthma. Condition of asthma control level can be determined by Asthma Control Test (ACT). Asthma recurrence is influenced by the level of asthma control in asthma patients, level of asthma recurrence is assessed by asthma recurrence questionnaire. This study was aimed to find the correlation between asthma control test with level of asthma recurrence in adult asthma patients. This study used cross sectional design with non probability consecutive sampling method. The population was all patient with asthma as many as 110 patients came to the emergency room Taman Husada Bontang Hospital on January 2012. The total of samples were 22 respondents taken according to inclusion criteria.The independent variable was Asthma Control Test (ACT), while the dependent variable was rate of asthma recurrence. Data were collected using a questionnaire, and analyzed by Spearman Rho test with level of significance p ≤ α, α = 0,05. The results of this study showed a correlation coefficient r = 0.453, with significance level p = 0.034, Ho was rejected so it means there was a substantial correlation between asthma control test (ACT) with the level of asthma recurrence in adult asthma patients. It can be concluded that there was a substantial positive correlation between Asthma Control Test (ACT) with asthma recurrence level, higher level of uncontrolled asthma relapse would be followed by an increasing of heavy asthma recurrence in adult asthma patients. Further studies should investigate the use of Asthma Control Test (ACT) in adolescence.
