Abstract

The infant mortality and morbidity in Indonesia are still high, this caused by the lack of mother’s knowledge about how to care the infant. Health education is one of an effort can be used to solve this problem. The purpose of this study was to know the effect of health education with audio visual method on how to care for a infant changing behavior in the primipara’s in new born infant care. This was a pre-experimental study using one group pre-post test design. The sample of this study comprised of 11 respondent which full filled the inclusion criteria by consecutive sampling technique. The independent variable was health education with audio visual method. Dependent variable was primipara’s behaviour in caring the new born infant. Data was collected using questionnaire and observation sheet. The data were analyzed using Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test, with significance level α ≤ 0.05. After health education with audio visual method had given, the result showed that primipara’s knowledge had p = 0.014, attitude had p = 0.046, and action had p = 0.014, those indicate that there is an significant effect of health education with audio visual method on the change of primipara’s behaviour in caring the new born infant. It can be concluded that health education with audio visual method, could improve knowledge, attitude and action of primipara’s in caring the new born infant. The visualization by audio visual methods could increase appeal, interests, perceptions, judgment, learning and emotional of primipara’s. Health education should be given to all new mothers who give birth to improve maternal care in the new born infant.
