Abstract

"Sea jujube (Slrychonas ligllslrina 8f) is one of the traditional plants known to be usable for alternative antidiabetics. However, it has not been proven experimentally. This study was aimed to find the effect of boiled sea jujube (Slrychonas ligllslrina Bf) on the reduction of blood glucose level in rats rendered to be diabetic by the induction with alloxan. This was an experimental study aimed to identify the possible causal relationship by providing treatment to experiment group and compared the latter with control group. Design used in this study was pretest and posttest control group design. This study involved 35 randomly-selected male Rallus norvegicus rats, aged 2-3 months, with body weight of 150-200 grams. All rats were rendered diabetic by providing 250 mg/kgBW alloxan intraperitoneally. The experimental animals were divided into 5 groups, each comprising 7 rats. Group I was negative control group, receiving only 2 mlloral distilled water. Group 2 comprised those receiving 10% boiled sea jujube. Group 3 received 15% boiled sea jujube, group 4 received 20%, and group 5 received 9 mg/kgBW oral metformin. Results showed that the change of blood glucose level in 3 hour after 10% sea jujube administration had p < 0.05, 15% had p > 0.05, and 20% had p < 0.05. The result of anova and LSD test revealed that sea jujube in concentration of 10% had been effective to reduce blood glucose level significantly. In positive control group, the effect of metformin in reducing blood glucose level ·occurred only to 2 hours after treatment. Based on linear regression test, the increase of sea jujube dose has linear correlation with its effect in reducing blood glucose level. Increasing dose should have increased the effect. The fact is, however, the higher the dose, the lower the effect of the sea jujube."
