Abstract

Lovaas method is the best therapy method for children with autism in which the succes of therapy rate was 47 %. Cakra Autisme Terapi is a school for special need children (Autism, ADHD, Speech delay) that practice Lovaas method in its curriculum. But the succes of therapy rate was only 22 % on April 2007. This study was aimed to analyze correlation among internal factor (degree of severity, age of beginning therapy, child intelligence, language ability) and external factor (therapy intensity, parent's knowledge, parent's role, and therapist quality) to the succes of therapy. Design used in this study was cross sectional design. The population was all of children with autism who study in Cakra Autime Terapi until July 2007. The sample was collected by purposive sampling. Total sample was 17 children taken according inclussion criteria. As independent variables were internal and external factor. As dependen factor was the succes of Lovaas method therapy. Data were collected using structure questionair from Handojo (2003) and CARS (Childhood Autism Rating Scale). Data were then analyzed using Spearman Rank Correlation test with signification level (p) :S 0,05. Result showed that degree of severity (p = 0,002), child intelligence (p = 0,000), language ability (p = 0,000), therapy intensity (p = 0,008), and parent's role (p = 0,000) had correlation to the succes of therapy. But, there is no correlation among age of beginning therapy, parent's knowledge, and therapist quality to the succes of therapy. It can be concluded that the succes of Lovaas method therapy has correlation with degree of severity, child intelligence, language ability, therapy intensity, and parent's rol, but has no correlation with age of beginning therapy, parent's knowledge, and therapist quality. Further studies should involve larger respondents and better measurement tools to obtain more accurate results.
