Abstract

problems are multifactorial and interrelated to each other, so that mitigation approach should involve different sectors. This study was aimed to determine what factors are associated with the incidence of malnutrition in elderly. Design used in this study was cross-sectional. The population were all the elderly who were malnourished in elderly IHC in the Urban Village Tuak Daun Merah Kupang City East Nusa Tenggara. Total sample was 35 respondents. The independent variables were physiological and psychological changes related to aging, economic level, family level of knowledge about nutrition, number of family members living in the house, social and cultural factors and the frequency of nutrient consumption. The dependent variable was the body mass index of the elderly. Data were collected using questionnaires and then analyzed using Spearman test with level of significance of p<0,05. The result showed that physiological changes related to aging in elderly had moderate correlation (p=0.012), psychological changes had no correlation (p=0.469), family economic level had moderate correlation (p=0.010), family level of knowledge about nutrition had a moderate correlation (p=0.04), number of family members living in the house had weak correlation (p=0.035), social and cultural factors had strong correlation (p=0.01) and for frequency of nutrient consumption had moderate correlation (p=0.02). It can be concluded that malnutrition in the elderly was related to factors physiological changes, economic level, family level of knowledge about nutrition, number of family members living in the house, social and cultural factors and the frequency of consumption of nutrients, but has no correlation with psychological changes. Therefore, geriatric nurses are expected to give more attention to the problems associated with malnutrition in elderly, especially all the factors that influence it.
