Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is an incurable. The number of people suffer from DM and its complication have increased each year. Diabetes Self Management Education (DSME) is the ongoing process of facilitating knowledge, skill and ability needed for diabetes self care and self empowerment that enable people to build the capacity that make the diabetes patients become more confidence to change the attitude toward a responsibility to take care themselves and achieve a good quality of life. The purpose of the study was to analyze the effect of DSME to improve self-empowerment type-2 DM patients in the region of Puskesmas Kebonsari Surabaya. This study used quasy experimental design. The population was all patients with diabetes mellitus as many as 331 people, 93 people were categorized as new patients between 45-55 years of age. Total sample was 20 respondents recruited using purposive sampling, 10 respondents assigned in treatment group and 10 respondents in comparison group. Data were collected by using questionnaire Diabetes Empowerment Scale. Data were analyzed with Wilcoxon signed rank test and Mann Whitney U test with level of significance p ≤ 0.05. The result of this experiment showed that the influence of DSME in increasing self-empowerment is significant with p = 0.005 in treatment group but not in p = 0.916 in comparison group. This means, there was significant influence of DSME to improve self empowerment on type-2 DM patients. It can be concluded that DSME have significant influence to self empowerment on type-2 DM patients. Further study should be considered to investigate the influence of DSME toward independence and compliance on type-2 DM patients.
