Abstract
This study is concerned with semiotics research related to cigarette advertisement."Surya 16-The bridge" and "Sampoerna Hijau-Ada budi, ada balas" version as the advertisements provide an interesting linguistic phenomenon which mostly describes masculinity. The study focuses on the linguistic message and denoted image shown in the advertisements. The theory is use in the study is semiotics by Roland Barthes. The data consist of two aspects inside the advertisements whichare linguistic message and denoted image. The linguistic message concerns with linguistic text images title and narration, while denoted image concerns with coded iconic messages {connotative) and non-coded iconic messages {denotative). The study found that there is relationship between linguistic message and denoted image which show how is masculinity constructed in those advertisements. In Surya 16 advertisement constructs masculinity with the men in reaching the vision which is not easy. This requires curiosity, opportunity, skill,strong beliefs and good appearance. On the other hand, Sampoerna Hijau advertisement shows notions of masculinity as being young, helping each other, having high solidarity, and caring about their environments.
