Abstract

In the Victorian era, patriarchy dominated almost all aspect of human life, including people's sexuality. The right sexual relationship, according to this ideology is the relationship between man and woman or so-called heterosexuality. Besides, man should be masculine while woman should be feminine. However, there is no doubt that the opposite of this heterosexual relationship exists among society. This opposition is called homosexuality (gay and lesbian). Homosexuality is represented trough some literary works. One of some literary works which contains the phenomenon of homosexuality is Sarah Waters' Tipping the Velvet. This story is about a lesbian woman named Nancy Astley who has special relationship with Kitty Butler. This thesis aims to analyze how is the lesbian relationship of Nancy and Kitty using the concept of Lesbian Continuum that is defined by Adrienne Rich. By using Adrienne Rich'stheory, the writer of this thesis will be able to make an analysis on Nancy's homosexual relationship with Kitty Butler.
