Abstract

The Macneils of Tokyo was first published in 2000. The novel sets on Japan and China during World War II around 1941 until 1945. The novel portrays on the participant of Macneils family during World War II. Seward uses Sarah as one of the family members who join the war. She joins Japanese Army as her way to safe the Jews refugees in China pass the war safely. The writer uses Atkinson's Theory of Achievement Motivation to analyze major characters affecting Sarah's motivation to help the Jews refugees finding a safe place for their settlement and her reaction against the threat of World War II and Nazi's 'final solution' for Jews refugees in Shanghai, China.
