Abstract

This study attempts to analyze the development of Eliza Sommers' character based on the conflicts that emerged in the novel Daughter of Fortune. It is a complicated story about a young girl named Eliza Sommers who is adopted by Sommers family. She is living between two cultures, English and Chilean. When she is in adolescence period she became confused about her origin. The writer uses New Criticism theory focused on formal elements as the tool to analyze the story, which focus in characters and characterization, plot, setting and conflict Close reading supported by data from library research is using to get knowledge and finding supporting theories those are appropriate with the discussion. Through the analysis, the writer finds that Eliza' character develops and is presented as a round character. Her character develops from immature to become mature and she decides that her origin is not important because whatever the truth was, she could do nothing to change it.
