Abstract

This study used a qualitative approach in discovering the differences of language used by male and female students of Basic Essay Writing Class of Airlangga University in writing descriptive paragraphs. This study was conducted since male and female used language differently and the differences can cause different interpretation of the gender among them. In writing English text. the differences can probably be seen in the use of words, phrases, and sentences, and even in the arrangement of ideas. This study specifically analyzed the similarities and the differences of words and phrases produced by male and female students in writing descriptive paragraphs. By using the AntConc software, the data from 8 male paragraphs and 1 5 female paragraphs were identified. The result reveals that male and female students used different language in writing descriptive paragraph and the differences can be noticed in some parts of the paragraphs. The results show that in the term of word classes, males use more adjectives, while females use more adverbs; from the dictions, males use more variety of words than females; in the types of phrases, males use more verb phrase while female more adverb phrase.
