Abstract

The study examines heteronormativity towards transgender child in Celine Sciamma's Tomboy. This study purposes to reveal how heteronormativity of Laure character as a transgender child is portrayed in the movie and the negotiations of Laure toward heteronormativity that must be applied regarding masculine-feminine concept and male-female as a born sign of sex. Queer theory especially heteronormativity suggested by Judith Butler will be used as the main theory. This research is a qualitative research where the data are taken from Tomboy movie, library research, journals, and other resources which appropriate in conducting the analysis. The thesis finds that the traditional gender role is strongly constructed in society which is based on one's sexual identity. The idea oftransgender in child as Laure's case is influenced by her ambiguity as a girl towards her body that makes her wearing boys' outfits, having attitudes as a boy, avoid any girls' values by not following the traditional gender role in heteronormative society. As a study of film, the writer also includes narrative and non-narrative aspects that support the portrayal of Laure and her negotiating process as a transgender child regarding queer issue as a French movie. This film becomes a "slapping silence" towards heteronormative people in France who do not pay attention about queer phenomenon in children.
