Abstract

This thesis is dealing with bilingual proficiency research which is conducted upon Sukamade' s children, Banyuwangi. It is fascinating firstly for me to find that people in this district may be able to speak Javanese and Madurese with good performance. They even can perform speaking both languages with different function (krama inggil), especially when facing visitors who be able to speak those two languages as well. Yet, the most interesting phenomenon which greatly attract me to observe is the 'semi-lingual' phenomenon which is conveyed by Sukamade's children. The children here, especially who took schooling at elementary school, SON Sarongan IV, mostly speak Javanese within their peer-group in every settings and any topic particularly if the participants are also children (same age as them). But, according to Kamituwo, they would abandon this habit in speaking Javanese as soon as they graduated from Elementary School and replace it by performing Madurese language.
