Abstract

SCTV, one of private television stations among others in Indonesia shows foreign film and uses subtitling or dubbing into Indonesian. The subtitling is a process of transferring from spoken language (source language) into written language (target language). It is a realization of replacement of materials in one language by equivalent to another language. This research analyzes subtitling of the serial "Melrose Place" into Indonesian. The research is guided by the question whether the Indonesian subtitle in Melrose Place on SCTV convey the messages like in the source language and whether subtitling result is appropriate to Indonesian commonly. Descriptive analysis method is used in the analyzing approach.to the phenomenon. Besides, the list of words and the theoretical framework is used to analyze 'the problem. The theory of translation by Nida, Savory and Catford and also sociolinguistics, especially etnography of speaking proposed by Dell Hymes being used to solve the cases.
