Abstract

This study examines the language variety that occurs in sport announcer talk, that is badminton commentator. It aims to describe how the vocabulary as one of the features of the register of badminton commentator used in the play by play descriptions by badminton commentators in Djarwn Sirkuit Nasional Surabaya 2012. The data were the play by play descriptions of three matches in Djarum Sirkuit Nasional Surabaya 2012 which were collected and recorded from television. The data were then analyzed by using Holmes' theory of Register (2008), theory of vocabulary of register (Biber, 2006), and based on the badminton vocabulary (Grice, 2008). The findings show that there are some vocabularies which peculiar for badminton. The use of those vocabularies were influenced by social factors, mainly setting.
