Abstract

This study aims at identifying and analyzing the types of teacher talk in English classroom produced by the teacher of eighth grades students while teaching recount text. Also it is aimed to investigate the students' success in producing recount text. The study is based on the qualitative approach. The data were collected from two teachers with d ifferent classes of eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 29 Surabaya. The classroom interaction between teacher and students were observed, recorded on digital recording and written notes for the additional information. The data were analyzed using Foreign Language Interaction (FLINT) system based on Brown (2007) to identify the types of teacher talk. The most dominated types of teacher talk are asking questions (39.23%), giving information (17.69%), giving directions (13.07%) but joking (0.38%) rarely occurs in this research. The result of this study indicates that teacher talk can help the success of the students in producing recount text. The conclusion of this study was the teachers would use their utterances to help the succes of the students in producing recount text.
