Abstract
Patients with stroke often experienced hemiparese and cranial nervus parese (VII, IX, X, XII) hence they were unable to keep mouth and teeth clean. The condition caused food debris accumulating in mouth which then metabolized by
streptococcus mutants and Lactobacillus casei bacteria until saliva pH became acid. Patient's effort to prevent decreased saliva pH was by rinsing their mouth with mineral water, but the pH didn't increase. Other alternative was rinsing with
physiological salt solution or chewing xylitol gum.
The research was quasi-experimental using pre-post test control design and purposive sampling technique. Population was patient with stroke treated in Nerve room B RSU Dr. Soetomo Surabaya. Sample consisted of 16 respondents where 8
in treatment group (xylitol gum) and 8 in control group (physiological salt solution). Independent variable was physiological salt solution and xylitol gum,
while dependent variable was pH degree of saliva. The pH measured by Schoot Handylab pH meter. Measurement result of pH was counted with Paired T -test.
Overall statistical test used significance level (l < 0,05.
Result of paired sample test showed that chewing xylitol gum proved could increase pH of saliva (p = 0,02) and rinsing mouth with physiological salt solution
proved cannot increase pH of saliva (p = 0,06). Result of independent sample test showed that pH of saliva in both groups (treatment and control group) was identical (p = 0,92). conclution that chewing xylitol gum was more effective for increasing pH of saliva. Further research should take account some factors that influenced pH of
saliva, capability or strength in chewing and rinsing mouth.
