Abstract
Joint pain is most commonly found among elderly, which is also the cause
of disability among this age group. In the condition of immobility for one week,
the muscle loses 30% of its largest part. In elderly, the reduction of muscular
function and strength results in reduced capability to maintain the balance of the
body. Strength training is beneficial to increase muscular mass and strength, bone
mass, joint flexibility, dynamic balance, self-confidence and self-esteem.
However, most of the patients in knee joint paint currently prevent physical
exercise, which is otherwise highly recommended to improve the strength of their
muscle. Strength training also reduces the symptoms of chronic diseases, whose
primary symptom is joint pain. The objective of this study was to analyze the
effect of strength training on the improvement of postural balance in elderly knee
joint pain.
This study used pre-experimental-one group pre post test design. Samples
were taken using purposive sampling according to the inclusion criteria, which
comprised 15 individuals. The independent variable was strength training, and the
dependent variable was postural balance in elderly knee joint pain. Data were
analyzed with paired t test with significance level of s 0.05. The result of paired t
test revealed p = 0.000.
In conclusion, strength training can improve postural balance in elderly
knee joint pain. Strength training can also increase muscular strength in elderly,
which has a role in improving postural balance. The result can be used as an input
for elderly care center in developing rehabilitative activities to improve the elderly
quality of life.
