Abstract
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) helps to change behavior and increase cognitive abilitiy and sleep quality of elderly. Changing negative behaviours and thoughts of sleep are the most appropriate way to overcome sleep disorders, especially in elderly. There were 16 cases of insomnia at Tresna Werdha Hargodedali Surabaya. To evercome this problem, it is needed to do a study the effect of cognitive behavioural therapy in improving the sleep quality and the ability to overcome insomnia in elderly. The research was enroll to those of 16 respondents using pre-experiment with pre-post test non-randomized single-group design. The independent variable in this research was the cognitive behavioural therapy with the dependent variable were the ability of elderly people in overcoming insomnia and the sleep quality. The data were collected by qutionaires and were then analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed rank test, with significance level of a< 0.05. The results showed that cognitive behavioural therapy improves the sleep quality and ability to overcome insomnia in elderly. According to the cognitive behavioural therapy a significant result to sleep quality was (p= 0.001) and the ability to overcome insomnia was expressed with knowledge (p= 0.001 ), attitude (p= 0.011), and action (p= 0.002). From the aforemention above, we can conclude that cognitive behavioural therapy is one of the therapy to overcome insomnia in elderly. It is hoped that cognitive behavioural therapy not only used as a therapy for sleep disorder, but also it needs to prove that there are other problems that can be solved by this therapy.
