Abstract

This study is about ethnic interaction between Indonesians (Indigenous) and Chinese (Chinese Indonesian Descendants) in Surabaya. For many centuries until today, a natural interaction has been running well and holistically they got assimilated to each other. This study refers to the theory of Structure by Giddens, Symbolic Interactionism by Mead and Blumer, Stranger by Wolff and Dramaturgy by Goffman. In addition, in reference to the national context, this study also refers to Ong's theory (1983) on the dividing politics of the Dutch colonialists, Wang's theory (1991) on the Chinese people identity in South East Asia, The First theory of Musianto (1993) on ethnic interaction through out history and the Second theory of Musianto (1997) on ethnic interaction with a grounded approach. So far, oppressive authority has been so dilemmatic, opportunistic, and discriminative that this distortion in solving the problem is inevitable. A more positive attitude expected from the authority is impartiality, justice, peace and goodwill. The grounded approach based on Strauss and Corbin reveals six core categories (ancestry, personality or mentality, education, status and position, socioeconomy, and rei igion of beliefs) In open coding, this six core categories are related to natural property flow (origin, process, environment and interests) all of which are measurable by eight dimensions consisting of four enabling dimensions and four constraining dimensions. The four enabl ing dimensions are the source of common interests, easily - intervened process, environment with a low cohesiveness and paralel interests. The four constraining dimensions are the source of egoistical interests, herdly - intervened process, environment with a strong cohesiveness and contradicting interests. Furthermore, the axial coding shows paradigm that consist of causes, phenomena, contect, intervening, interaction, and consequences. After the axial coding through a data reduction, the study finds a selective coding in the form of conclusion which tends to, in certain nuances, lead to stories (Chapter V). Overall it's proven that interaction principles are dimensions as dynamics obyects and categories and their properties as statics obyects. The resul ts of this study refer to the ways of solving the problem through reflection and emphaty leading to some cultural common ground. It is also proven that ethnic problems have been caused by non ethnic problems, such as interests, self identity and the prospect of changing the norms in the future. At least, for Indonesia these grounded studies could help minimize negative effects in our SARA negative problem (Suku, Agama, Ras dan Antar golongan). These problems must be exposed, especially among the social scientists in the attempt to find object ively accomodative action. Once again, this accomodative action must be natural, object ive and free from any group or personal interest at all.
