Abstract

Introduction For several decades there is an increase in burnout among healthcare professionals. Burnout is a syndrome of psychological exhaustion, cynicism, and inefficiency caused by a chronic response to job stressors. The search strategy was limited to five databases; Scopus, Science direct, Pubmed, SAGE, and ProQuest. Method The search was conducted from June to July 2020. The keywords used were H.ealth Personnel OR Health Care Professionals OR Healthcare Workers, Hospital, Burnout OR Burnout Syndrome, Mindfulness, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy using the Boolean term search phrase AND and OR. The quality assessment uses the JBI Critical Appraisal Tool and the PRISMA checklist. The articles were divided into two major themes, mindfulness-based interventions (n: 16) and cognitive behavioral therapy (n: 9). Result Respondents in this study were healthcare professional consisting of doctors, nurses, and healthcare assistant. Most of the respondents were nurses from general ward, outpatient, ICU, and mental healthcare nurse with working experience ranging from 0.5 to 35 years. Mindfulness-based interventions were given in 3 to 8 practice sessions while CBT is between 2 to 10 sessions. Discussion The summary results of 25 articles show that 19 articles with significant research results. 19 articles provided individual interventions, 5 articles individually, and 1 article compared groups and individuals. This systematic review concludes that mindfulness-based interventions and cognitive behavioral therapy can be combined (blended methods) to reduce burnout. In addition, they can be used to treat anxiety, stress, depression, insomnia, and increase resilience.
