Abstract

The aim of this study was to prove the benefits of black cumin (Nigel/a sativa) extract against the amount of Langerhans islet cells white rats (Rattus norvegicus) induced diabetes mellitus. Twenty-five male rats were randomly divided into five groups. Negative control group (PO) was injected with physiological saline while the positive control (Pl) was injected intraperitoneally with alloxan 150 mg/kg bw. The other treatment (P2, P3, and P4) injected with alloxan 150 mg/kg bw and treated with black cumin extract 5, 10, 15 g/kg bw respectively. Black cumin extract administered orally for 14 days, then rats were necropsy and pancreas was taken for histopathological examination. Data were analyzed using ANOVA (Analyzed of Variance) continued with Duncan's. The result of this study indicated that black cumin extract can increase the amount of Langerhans islet cells white rats (Rattus norvegicus) induced diabetes mellitus, consequently black cumin can be used as an alternative therapy for patients with diabetes mellitus.
