Abstract
Immobilization is one of the treatment procedures that should be undertaken to hyphemic patients. However, the patients themselves are often unaware of the importance of immobilization for the healing process of disease. The role of the nurse is therefore needed to provide health education on the effect of immobilization in patients with hyphemia. Unfortunately, health education provided today remains less optimal. The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of health education on immobilization among hyphemic patients This study used static-group comparison design. Samples, comprising 16 respondents, were hyphemic patiens in Ophthalmology Wards, Dr. Soetomo
Hospital, who were enrolled using consecutive sampling. The independent variable was health education, and the dependent variable was the patient's immobilization behavior. Data were collected using observation undertaken to groups given with health education and that not given with health education. Analysus was performed by means of Mann Whitney test. Results revealed that ini treatment group satisfactory immobilization behavior was found in 7 patients (87,5%), while in non treatment group most of the patients, comprising 5 individuals (62,5%), showed moderate immobilization behavior. Results of statistical test showed p=O,002, indicating sign.ificant difference in immobilization behavior between patients receiveng health education and those not receiving health education. As a conclusion, health education on the effect of immobilization has influence on immobilization behavior in hyphemic patients. It is recommended to provide health education ti the patients immediately after admittance, and to establish a standard procedure on the treatment of hyphemic patients, particularly health education on the effect of immobilization.
