Abstract

Grammar is the backbone of the language because it helps people construct clear sentences. In daily, simple present tense and simple past tense are the most used tenses. To understand the use of simple present tense and simple past tense, this final report explores two statements of the problem (1) how the simple present tense is used in the sentences of the book entitled “Little Lily & Daisy”, and (2) how the simple past tense is used in the sentences of the book entitled “Little Lily & Daisy”. The writer used the theory of Azar and Hagen (2017) to analyze the use of simple present tense and simple past tense in the picture book. In the picture book, the writer utilized all the formulas from simple present tense including affirmative, negative, and interrogative. Also all the usage of simple present tense including general truth, general statement of fact, and habitual action. Furthermore, the writer also used all the formulas of simple past tense, which are affirmative, negative, and interrogative, and two usage of simple past tense, which is named past activity or situation and a series of past actions. The writer did not use one of the usage which is simple past in when-clause because the writer did not find it fit with the story.
