Abstract

Environmental values in business play a great role in the marketplace today. As a consequence, companies are pushed to accomplish both of environmental performance and product quality simultaneously, called as eco-efficiency principle. Eco-efficiency is an instrument for sustainability analysis of industry, indicating an empirical relation in economic activities between environmental cost or value and environmental impact. Eco-efficiency can serve companies as a means for developing and successfully implementing a business strategy toward sustainability. Furthermore, it can be developed as an indicator tool used for measuring performance and assisting in decision making. This research explained the effect of environmental cost fluctuation in PT Semen Gresik (Persero) Tbk. during periods of 2007-2009 towards its eco-efficiency progress achievement measured using indicators that adapted from World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). Moreover, this eco-efficiency analysis also used for cost efficiency and environmental benefits determination that achieved by company. Conducted in qualitative explanatory using both primary and secondary data, this research revealed that eco-efficiency evaluation in PT Semen Gresik showed a positive movement which indicated better progress of eco-efficiency implementation in a given periods. The increasing of company environmental costs during periods of 2007-2009 has a positive correlation towards the eco-efficiency movement as long as the increasing is triggered by the control cost side, instead of the failure ones. Yet, the increasing in the environmental performance through eco-efficiency valuation was not compensated as significant as the reduction in economy performance. This research also presented any materials and energy efficiency attainment in PT Semen Gresik during periods through eco-efficiency analysis which ends up to the cost efficiency and environmental benefits as one indicator in developing of company competitive advantage
