Abstract

Rebelliousness is an objection to the rules made to obey. Mostly the rebel action can be found in teenagers who tend to find themselves not suitable with the rules they have to follow. The rebellion’s output can form a negative personality trait that is crucial to define teenagers in how they act and react, including how they will decide to destruct or preserve their lives. This issue is portrayed in the novel by Rachael Lippincott and friends entitled Five Feet Apart. The novel is about two teenagers with Cystic Fibrosis (CF), and one of them namely William (Will) Newman who tended to rebel by abandoning the treatment and clinical trial due to his incurable condition of B. Cepacia that made his name erased from the lung transplant list. Besides, his rebelliousness did not only elaborate on how he did the self-destructive action but also how it elaborated on his way to preserve his life by seeking freedom and happiness. This study applied the qualitative method and Freudian Psychoanalysis approach in the theory of drive to reveal Will’s motive and form of his rebel action as a will to survive from what he did not desire to have. This study reveals how Will is portrayed as having his rebellious actions to gain attentions from his mother, to share love with his girlfriend, and to achieve his dreams to be free from any medical treatment.
