Abstract

Due to the rapid technological development, newspapers start to produce their news in the form of online news. In delivering the news, the texts have to be concise in order to be easy to understand. Cohesive devices create unity and connect ideas in the text, and thus the text can be understood by the readers. This study examined the cohesive devices used in the New York Times news articles about Russia-Ukraine. The articles were published on February 24 to February 26, 2022 and have 9142 words in total. The theory used to analyze the data is the theory of cohesive devices by Halliday and Hasan (1976). Renkema's (2004) theory is also used as a supporting theory. This study used a qualitative approach as the data are not only identified, but also interpreted. The results of the study reveal that the news articles used all types of cohesion. From the 10 news articles, grammatical cohesion occurred 705 times while lexical cohesion occurred 1005 times. The most frequent uses of cohesion from each type are personal reference and repetition.
