Abstract
Several studies investigated discourse functions of first-person pronouns inresearch articles. The use of first-person pronouns in research articles lead to the establishment of authors’ role. The present study explores how first- person pronouns represent the role of authors in research article. An extended analysis on stance features that involve hedges and boosters was also conducted. Each section of Linguistics research articles published by PLOS ONE was the source of data. The roles of authors were observed by using Tang & John’s (1999) theory, i.e., (1) Representative, (2) Guide, (3) Architect, (4) Recounter of The Research Process, (5) Opinion Holder, and (6) Originator. Hyland’s (2005) hedges and boosters were also employed for extending the study. AntCorGen was adopted for collecting each section of Linguistics research articles and the concordances of first-person pronouns were found by using AntConc. First-person pronoun we is predominantly adopted in all of research articles’ sections. The role as Recounter of The Research Process was frequently used in three out of five sections. The role as Recounter of The Research Process is proposed to let the readers know few steps about how to conduct research in corpus of Introduction, to elaborate the research methods in corpus of Material and Method, and to review some specific research processes in corpus of Results and Discussion. The role as Architect is the most frequently used in corpus of Abstract because it represents the research plan. The role as Opinion Holder is the most predominantly employed in corpus of Conclusion in order to clarify the research questions. Acting verbs were commonly employed in wehedges and we-boosters. The verbs find and found were often adopted in the data.
