Abstract

This study investigates the tolerance and harmony practices between the Chinese diasporic community and the indigenous Malay and Dayak people in Singkawang town, West Kalimantan. It examines their socio-cultural practices and inter-ethnic communication, offering a multidisciplinary perspective on global migration in Indonesia. Singkawang is a peaceful and tolerant town, home to various ethnic groups such as Chinese, Malay, Dayak, Javanese and Madurese. The study aims to examine the life of tolerance and harmonisation within the Chinese diasporic community and the socio-cultural and community life, as well as inter-ethnic communication, maintained by the community. The research uses a qualitative research method, including informal conversations, in-depth interviews and focused group discussions with community leaders and representative members of the community with various ethnic backgrounds. The study concludes that public perceptions about differences are crucial for maintaining tolerance and inter-ethnic communication. The strategy of empathy or cultural empathy helps restrain ourselves’ and see differences as the uniqueness of each ethnicity. Community leaders play a crucial role in minimising differences by initiating communication forums and increasing understanding of differences, despite the challenges in practice.
