Abstract

This study aimed to examine the preventive effect of ethanol extract of galangal (Alpinia galanga) as protection and the level of thickening of the pulmonary alveolar septa and alveolar diameter in mice (Mus musculus) exposed to lead acetate orally. A total of 25 male mice with an average weight of 25-30 grams and 2.5-3 months old. Were used and devided into 5 groups. The negative control group (K-) was given aquadest orally without exposure to lead acetate, the positive control group (K+) was exposed to lead acetate dissolved with aquadest orally at a dose of 20mg/kg/BB, While the treatments group P1, P2, and P3 was exposed to lead acetate at a dose of 20mg/kgBB and was given ethanol extract of galangal at a dose of 200 mg/Kg BB, 400 mg/KgBB, 800 mg/KgBB orally. The mean for alveolar septa thickening in the K-, K+, P1, P2, and P3 groups were 18.72a ± 3.26, 30.79c ± 2.79, 26.34b ± 1.79, 24.97b ± 3.47 and 23.90b ± 3.77. The results showed that the average number of alveolar diameter in the K-, K+, P1, P2, and P3 groups was 131.98c ± 16.19, 74.01a ± 16.57, 103.63b ± 21.19, 109.69b ± 12.17 dan 116.86bc ± 8.39. This study concluded that ethanol galangal extract gave preventive effect on the septa alveolar thickening and alveolar diameter in the mice (Mus musculus) lungs exposed lead acetate.
