Abstract

Background: Scabies is a parasitic infection caused by Sarcoptes scabiei mite transmitted through direct and indirect individual contact. Scabies has a high prevalence in children, and malnutrition is one of the risk factors for scabies. Based on some research, there is a significant relationship between malnutrition conditions in children and scabies incidents. Aim: To find the association between the nutritional status of children with scabies in the Dermatology and Venerology Department General Hospital Dr. Soetomo Surabaya in 2018 – 2019. Method: This is retrospective observative-analytic research with medical record data of pediatric scabies patients on Dermatology and Venerology Department General Hospital Dr. Soetomo Surabaya in 2018 – 2019. Samples were taken using the total sampling method with age, weight, height, nutritional status, and the type of lesion from scabies as the variables. The data were analyzed using Spearman's rho correlation test with SPSS version 24. Result: 229 samples passed the inclusion criteria, and most of the samples have obesity, and overweight nutritional status, with the most frequent lesion being erythematous papule. Based on the Spearman's rho test, there is no significant association between nutritional status and the secondary infection of scabies, which is shown by p-value more than 0.05. Meanwhile, for the scabies lesion, there is a significant association between nutritional status with papules (p = 0,022) for samples from 0 – 60 months old and crusts (p = 0,012) for samples with age 5 – 13. Conclusion: Children have no significant association between nutritional status and secondary infection of scabies, but there is a significant association between nutritional status, papules, and crusts lesions.
