Abstract

This study presents the internet language features and diction of the tweets of Miley Cyrus and Paris Hilton. Since twitter is the most popular micro-blogging which has more than 40 million users and 500 million tweets sent per day, the writer chose it as the object of this study. It is one of the social media that is dealing with multidimensional continuum or the combination way between spoken and written communication. In analyzing the data, the writer used mixed method approach. She collected 100 tweets from Miley Cyrus and 100 tweets from Paris Hilton in February 2014 as the corpus data by purposive sampling. The contribution of this study is to give more information about the use and the meanings of the unique internet language features as well as to give the relation between language and age. The aim of this study is to figure out the typical internet language features and dictions used by Miley Cyrus and Paris Hilton as the famous public figure who has different age. The internet languages found in the data are being analyzed based on the eleven common features of digital writing proposed by Danet, which are multiple punctuations, eccentric spelling,capital letters, asterisks for emphasis, written-out laughter, music/noise,description of actions, emoticons, abbreviations, rebus writing, and all lower case. The findings show that the three most typical internet language features used by Miley Cyrus are emoticons, eccentric spelling, and capital letters. On the other hand, the three most typical internet language features used by Paris Hilton are abbreviations, emoticons, and multiple punctuation. In the use of dictions, the typical choices of words by Miley Cyrus are specific, low frequency use, contain of some taboo terms, and tend to relate to the past and present time. In contrast,the typical choices of words by Paris Hilton are general, high frequency use, and tend to relate to the present and future time. Besides, the type of vocabularies used by Miley Cyrus is higher than those are used by Paris Hilton.
