Abstract

The presence of aging, comorbidities, decreased nutritional intake, and drug use in geriatric patients can cause fluid and electrolyte balance disorders. This study aims to examine electrolyte therapy and the achievement of electrolyte correction in geriatric patients with electrolyte deficits. This study used observational-retrospective method and descriptive analysis method. The data were taken using time limited sampling technique. The study subjects were geriatric patients with electrolyte deficits who were hospitalized in the period of January to December 2021. The number of patients who met the inclusion criteria were 66 patients consisting of 17 patients with hyponatremia, 16 patients with hyponatremia and hypokalemia, 31 patients with hypokalemia, 2 patients with hypomagnesemia and hypokalemia. Sodium correction therapy in geriatric patients was salt capsules, 0.9% NaCl infusion and 3% NaCl infusion. Therapy for potassium correction in geriatric patients were KSR tablets 600 mg and potassium chloride infusion consisting of several strengths among 25 to 100 mEq. Therapy for hypomagnesia used MgSO4 20% at a dose of 1 gram, 4 grams and 5 grams. Administration of electrolyte fluid therapy was carried out slowly, generally within 12-24 hours. The achievement electrolyte correction in geriatric patients were 89%, 93% and 50% for sodium, potassium and magnesium corrections respectively
