Abstract

This study is about the nouns related to the adjective ‘beautiful’ in the American English from 1911 to 2010. The purpose of this study is to find the the concept of beauty from 1911 to 2010 by using COHA (The Corpus of Historical of American English) and COCA (The Corpus of Contemporary of American English) as the sources. This study wants to determine the most frequent noun collocates of the adjective ‘beautiful from 1911 to 2010 which are divided into ten period of time, and across the following genres: fiction, popular magazines, and newspapers. The analysis also include the discussion on the similarities and the differences of the noun collocates of the adjective ‘beautiful’ in 1911 to 2010. The writer used both qualitative and quantitative approach. In the noun collocates of the adjective ‘beautiful’ across time, there are three nouns which always appear from 1911 to 2010, they are WOMAN, GIRL, and THING. In addition there are also noun collocates that only appear in a certain period of time. For 1911-1920, there is the noun DAY. In 1921-1930, there is the noun BODY. For 1931-1940, there is found the noun VOICE. For 1941-1950, there is the noun PLACE. In 1951-1960, there occures the noun CLOTHES. In 1961-1970, there is the noun MUSIC. For 1971-1980, there occures the noun EYES. For 1981-1990, the noun is BAMBOO. In 1991-2000, there is found the noun ONES. In 2001-2010, the noun is MIND. The writer also analyzed the usage of the adjective ‘beautiful’ across genres. The most common used of the word ‘beautiful’ is in fiction, the second is in magazine, and the last is in newspaper. This study shows that the usage of the adjective ‘beautiful’ across time can be related to being mature, and the usage of the adjective ‘beautiful’ across genres can be related to the sense of art.
