Abstract

The study of cooperatives has long occupied a unique position within economic and organizational literature. Unlike conventional Capital-Based Enterprises (CBEs), cooperatives combine economic objectives with democratic governance, collective ownership, and member participation. This dual character often makes cooperatives difficult to analyze using traditional business frameworks, while at the same time distinguishing them as one of the most innovative institutional responses to market challenges, social inequality, and community development needs. In an era characterized by rapid technological change, economic globalization, digital transformation, and increasing concerns about inclusive growth, the relevance of cooperatives deserves renewed attention. Around the world, cooperatives continue to operate in agriculture, finance, retail, housing, energy, education, healthcare, and many other sectors. Their resilience during economic crises and their ability to balance economic efficiency with social responsibility have attracted growing interest from scholars, policymakers, and practitioners alike. This book, Cooperatives as Enterprises: Theory, Governance, and the Future in the Modern Economy, provides an important contribution to contemporary discussions on cooperatives. Rather than approaching cooperatives solely from historical, ideological, or normative perspectives, the book examines them as economic enterprises that must function within competitive markets while remaining faithful to their cooperative identity. This perspective is particularly valuable because many discussions of cooperatives focus extensively on principles and values but pay less attention to the organizational, managerial, and economic realities that determine long-term sustainability.
