Abstract

Human biological variation is one of studies in physical anthropology that focused on the genetic, anatomical, and paleontological. One of the human biological variation is dentition. Dentition will have a chronological eruption for each type, ranging from deciduous teeth to permanent teeth. Based on the facts about the eruption of teeth, it can be said of certain human populations may have a variety of patterns of tooth eruption (eruption pattern), that differ between human race, gender, and age. This research observed the variation in tooth eruption in Javanese and Chinese children aged 7 years. The statement of problems of this research are (1) whether there are differences in the types of teeth erupted in Javanese and Chinese children aged 7 years; and (2) whether there are differences in the degree of eruption of certain teeth in Javanese and Chinese children aged 7 years? The hypothesis of this reasearch is that there are differences in the types of teeth erupted in Javanese and Chinese children aged 7 years dan there is a difference of the degree of eruption in incisors, canines, and molars –in Javanese and Chinese children aged 7 years. According Schour and Massler, children have mixed dentition at the age of 7-10 years This study employs Mann-Whitney test to see whether there is any significant difference between the groups. The location of research is in SDN Kaliasin I/280 Surabaya and SDK Santa Maria Surabaya. -- There were 80 Javanese children--40 boys and 40 girls; and 66 Chinese children--34 boys and 32 girls. The results showed that Javanese and Chinese boys have a significant difference in the degree of tooth eruption in several types of teeth. There were many variations in the degree of tooth eruption among the boys. The erupted teeth were deciduous canine, incisor first (central) and second (lateral) on the upper jaw, and the deciduous first molar. The girls showed less variation in the type of teeth erupted. The erupted teeth were deciduous canine and second lateral incisor on both lower right and left jaw. Furthermore, the timing and the sequence of eruption were significantly different between the groups and sexes.
