Abstract

The history of government in Madura is lead by a King and there are many Kingdom in the past. Sumenep is a regency that still has strong palace buildings and many generation of palace lives in Sumenep. In this case, the focus of this research is whether noble status is still functional for noble descent and is there still polarization in noble descent social living in Sumenep. This explanation includes symbols that influence the forming of polarization. Symbolic interactionism theory of Herbert Blumer is a theoretical framework in this research. When there is interaction, the way of thinking of noble generation is formed based on their point of views about symbols that has relation with polarization in the noble descent community. Symbolic interactionism theory of Herbert Blumer has interpretative paradigm, therefore this research is an interpretative one with assumption that noble descent is still polarized based on noble status symbols. Methodology that being used is qualitative one with descriptive research type. The result is that all noble descents is not polarized based on economy discrepancy, but most noble descent is polarized based on the aspect of descent, social and status symbols. Polarization is created from the action of noble descents based on physical symbols, social symbols, and abstract symbols. This noble descent creates self awareness on noble descent in giving prestige on every action or behavior of noble descent, preserve and maintain the value of palace culture and respect every palace descents, whether the young or the old one.
