Abstract
Internal wars continue to be present in current international affairs with characteristically different conflict dynamics, often centered in economic calculation and emerging as a challenge to policy makers and the international community. The Angolan civil war is an example of an internal war plagued with economic calculations in sustaining the war and inhibiting the peace process. Such economic calculations are reflected in actions that seek to economically harm others, hence constituting `economic violence'. This research seeks to initially identify the forms of economic violence evident in the Angolan Civil War. After inquiry into the forms and structure of the Angolan civil war, the question posed in this research are targeted to the international response that was formed to actively react to the economic violence in the Angolan civil war. More specifically, how is the shaping and measurement of success of the international response towards Angolan economic violence analyzed using regime theory. Also, how is the shaping of international response analyzed within the internationalism framework and its emphasis on law, organization, exchange and communication? In identifying the economic violence in Angola, a theory of economic violence derived from David Keen is used. In analyzing international response, a systemic level of analysis is utilized in this research, corresponding to the mainly systemic nature of the regime theory derived from Oran Young and the theory of internationalism derived from Kjell Goldmann that are to be utilized. This writing argues that the foremost determining factor in international response in the forms of regimes is the systemic forging of knowledge and understanding of economic violence because it shapes all subsequent response.
