Abstract

Background. Potentially contaminated alginate impression that contaminated by saliva and blood could cause cross infection. To prevent cross infection, the impression have to be disinfected by disinfectant liquid such as Pomegranate rind infusion. Pomegranate has some chemical content such as alkaloid which is a phenol group that act as antibacterial, flavonoid as antibacterial, antivirus and tannin act as antibacterial and antifungal. Purpose. The purpose of this study is to find out the most effective concentration of pomegranate rind infusion as disinfectant to decrease microorganism colony on the alginate impression surface. Material and method. Twenty eight samples have been taken from 7 respondens. The alginate impression devided into 4 groups: group 1 sprayed by sterile aquades (as control), group 2 sprayed with Pomegranate rind infusion 25% for 30 second, group 3 sprayed with Pomegranate rind infusion 50% for 30 second, group 4 sprayed with Pomegranate rind infusion 100% for 30 second. The microorganism colony was counted using Kolmogorov-Smirnov test to analyze the data, then Kruskal Wallis and Mann Whitney for further analysis. Result. There is significant differences between each group, p = 0,002 (p<0,05). Conclusion. The higher concentration of Pomengranate rind infusion used as disinfectant, the lower amount of microorganism colony would be found on the alginate impression.
