Abstract

Background: The removable orthodontic appliance treatment may give the impact on the health of gingiva and periodontal tissue. This impact may occur during treatment or several months after the treatment. Purpose: The aim of this study was to know the correlation between the gingival health and the oral hygiene in the using of the removable orthodontic appliance in the clinic of the first graduation in Orthodontic Dentistry Faculty at Surabaya Airlangga University. Methods: This study was done on forty one children, nine until eleven years old when using removable orthodontic appliance after sixth months of treatment in the clinic of the first graduation in Orthodontic Dentistry Faculty at Surabaya Airlangga University. The data was taken by examining and measuring gingival health and oral hygiene. Gingival health was measured using Gingival Index (GI) and oral hygiene was measured using Oral Hygiene Index-Simplified (OHI-S). GI and OHI-S were evaluated again after the second of activation (± 6 weeks). Results: In the beginning of the study, the data was analyzed by Spearman correlation test (=0,05). The result of this study showed that there was significant correlation between gingival health and oral hygiene in the using of the removable orthodontic appliance in the beginning of the study. In the end of the study, the data was analyzed by Pearson product moment correlation test (=0,05). The result of this study showed that there was significant correlation between gingival health and oral hygiene in the using of the removable orthodontic appliance in the end of the study. Conclusion: By maintaining oral hygiene in the using of removable orthodontic appliance, gingival health will also get better.
