Abstract
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) known as etiology of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) which weaken immune system. Oral lesions are common and problem as well include symptom of xerostomia or dry mouth which can cause caries, gingivitis, mucocitis, oral candidiasis, angular cheilitis, and halitosis. Purpose. The aims of this study were to know the prevalence of xerostomia, to correlated the CD4+ count and long term used of antiretroviral therapy (ART) with the salivary flow rates on HIV/AIDS patients. Methods. Twenty-seven HIV positive patients age 20 to 50 years old who had received antiretroviral therapy (ART) were include in the study. Patients were clinically examined and taken sialometry test for measuring the unstimulated salivary flow rates and CD4+ count test. Result. Our results revealed that, the salivary flow rates of 27 patients i.e : 8 patients had < 0.1 ml/minutes (29.63%), 8 patients had 0.1 – 0.29 ml/minutes (29.63%), 9 patients had 0.3 - 0.7 ml/minutes (33.33%) and 2 patients had > 0.7 ml/minutes (7.4%). The correlation between the saliva flow rates with the CD4+ count is not significant (r -0.077, p>0.05). The long term used of antiretroviral therapy (ART) toward the saliva flow rates decreasing was also found insignificant (r 0.082, p>0.05). Conclusion. Not all of patients HIV/AIDS with antiretroviral therapy (ART) suffered xerostomia. Of the 27 patients HIV/AIDS who had received antiretroviral therapy (ART), there were 8 patients with xerostomia (29.63 %). There was no correlation between the saliva flow rates and the CD4+ count of HIV/AIDS patients with antiretroviral therapy (ART). The long term used of antiretroviral therapy (ART) combination of NRTI and NNRTI did not caused xerostomia.
