Abstract
Background. Children with mild retardation have the highest intelligence level, compare these with the other type of retardation. They experience a delay in their cognitive ability (below normal average) and adaptive behavior. As the result, they cannot independently take care of themselves, including their dental and oral health. The implementation of dental and oral health promotion in children with mild retardation through Bogi puppets as a media health promotion to improve the knowledge and skills level of children with mild retardation in order to increase self-suparting in take care of themselves. Purpose. To compare Bogi puppet and flipchart as a media promotion of dental and oral health in children with mild retardation to change the knowledge and skill levels. Materials and Method. Sample was 50 children, it divided into 25 children as control group, and 25 children as experiment group. Then the control group were given health promotion with flipchart and the experiment group were given health promotion with Bogi puppets. To observe changes in knowledge levels, sample were measured by questionnaire and to observe changes in skill levels, sample were measured by check list and PHP (Personal Hygiene Performance) index. Results. There was significant difference knowledge and skill levels between before and after the dental and oral health promotion with Bogi puppets. Conclusion. Health promotion with Bogi puppets can improve knowledge and skill levels of children with mild retardation about dental and oral health when its compared with flipchart.
