Abstract

Background. Acrylic based denture can be contaminated by Candida albicans that caused stomatitis while in contact with palatal mucosa. This is due to micro porosity of acrylic surface which is difficult to clean with only brushing. Natural products as bay leaf extract can be used as denture cleaner alternative which had antifungal activities against Candida albicans. Purpose. The aim of this study is to find out the effective concentration of the bay leaf extract in inhibiting the growth of Candida albicans. Method. The sample was rectangular (10 x 10x 1 mm). There are 5 groups and each group consist of 6 samples. The data were analyzed statistically using Kolmogorov Smirnov and One-way ANOVA test with level of significance 5%.Results. All group that were soaked in bay leaf extract showed decreased number of Candida albicans colonies compared with the control group.Conclusion. The higher concentration of bay leaf extract is more effective in inhibiting the growth of Candida albicans.
