Abstract

Background. The failure of a root canal treatment can be caused due to the persistence of the microorganisms left in its root. The bacterium that often causes infection to the failure of root canal treatment is Enterococcus faecalis. The prevalence of infection caused by Enterococcus faecalis ranges between 24% -77%. Nowadays, people start to develop the treatment using herbal ingredients. One of the herbal ingredients which often develop as medicine is Anredera cordifolia, therefore, it is possible that the content of chemical compounds in Anredera cordifolia have antibacterial properties that can inhibit the growth of bacterium Enterococcus faecalis. Purpose. To know the effective concentration of Anredera cordifolia extract as an antibacterial against the bacterium Enterococcus faecalis. Method. This research is an experimental laboratory with Posttest only control group design using bacterium Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212 diluted according to Mc. Farland standard 1.5 x 108 CFU / ml with the treatment of binahong leaves extract concentration of 100%, 95%, 90%, 85%, 80%, 75%, 70% 65%, 60%, 55% and 50% is given on each 0.05 ml of bacterium on nutrient agar. Result. At a concentration of 60% Anredera cordifolia extract show that the growth of colonies is less than the positive control and a concentration of 65% Anredera cordifolia extract have no apparent growth of bacterium Enterococcus faecalis. Conclusion. Anredera cordifolia extract have antibacterial activity against the growth of bacterial colonies Enterococcus faecalis with Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) by 60% and the Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) of 65%.
