Abstract

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of the most prevalent chronic disease in Indonesia. Patients with stage 5 chronic kidney disease or End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) requiring maintenance hemodialysis exhibit oral mucosal abnormalities due to uremic syndrome in these patients, restricted fluid intake, and hemodialysis itself. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to find out the prevalence of oral mucosal abnormalities in ESRD patients who underwent hemodialysis therapy and improve the quality of life in these patients Methods: A desctiptive observational, cross-sectional study was carried out in 61 ESRD patients patients on maintenance hemodialysis in Hemodialysis Instalation of Haji Genereal Hospital Surabaya. The oral mucosal abnormalities were documented and the identification was carried out by Oral Medicine Specialists. Results: The most common oral mucosal abnormalities were mucosal pallor (80,3%), petechiae/ecchymosis (55,7%), gingival hyperplasia (47,5%), and coated tongue (42,6%). There were only a few cases of uremic stomatitis (9,8%) and oral candidiasis (4,9%). Conclusion: A variety of oral mucosal abnormalities were shown in patients undergoing hemodialysis with mucosal pallor as the most common oral mucosal abnormality. Other common abnormalities found in this study were petechiae/ecchymosis, coated tongue, and gingival hyperplasia.
