Abstract

Background. Many Indonesian people (90%) still suffer dental and oral health problems. The two most common dental and oral health problems in Indonesia are dental caries and periodontal disease. Both of them caused by poor oral hygiene where many plaque accumulation can be found. Oral hygiene can be measured by Oral Hygiene Index Simplified (OHI-S) which is created by Green and Vermillion in 1964. OHI-S can be measured by counting the amount of both debris and calculus that accumulated on the index teeth surfaces. Purpose. The aim of this study is to measure the oral hygiene status among patients of Puskesmas Jagir Surabaya with OHI-S which can be used as reference for providing a better dental care. Method. This study observed 100 patients of Puskesmas Jagir Surabaya oral hygiene. Oral hygiene status will be measured with Oral Hygiene Index Simplified (OHI-S) by Greene and Vermillion (1964) by observing plaque and dental calculus accumulation on the tooth surface. Results. The result showed that 75% from 100 had good oral hygiene and 25% had moderate oral hygiene. Conclusion. The patients oral hygiene status at Puskesmas Jagir Surabaya in 2015 concluded as good and more dental health education from health practicioners is needed for increasing dental health among citizens.
