Abstract

Background: Erupting third molar tooth is usually covered by gingiva on its occlusal surface, potentially forming a pocket. Partially erupted or malpositioned third molar have possibility to impact overlying gingiva and causing pericoronitis. Pericoronitis is an inflammatory condition mainly caused by accumulation of oral normal flora inside the pocket. One of the main principal of managing acute pericoronitis is to reduce the colonization of the bacteria by using hydrogen peroxide liquid. However, it is irritative. Miswak has been used as an oral health substance since centuries ago, and now it is proven scientifically to be good for the health of oral cavity. Unfortunately, an experiment to acknowledge the potential of miswak against bacteria causing acute pericoronitis has never been conducted. Purpose: To acknowledge the inhibitory potential of miswak extract against bacteria causing acute pericoronitis by measuring the diameter of inhibiting zone. Method: Salvadora persica powder was macerated into 96% of ethanol, extracted until free of solvent, then diluted into three different concentrations, 50%, 75%, and 100%. Bacteria of acute pericoronitis were taken as samples with paper point, inoculated inside BHI-Broth for 24 hours, then cultured into Nutrient Agar. All inoculation processed under anaerobic circumstances. Paper disks were applied to place each concentration of the test solution upon the media. Result: There were significant differences among all of the test solution used in this experiment. Conclusion: Aqueous miswak extract was potent to inhibit the growth of bacteria which cause acute pericoronitis, starting on 50% concentration of the extract.
