Abstract

Toothpastes are daily oral care products. One of toothpaste contain is detergent that function is foaming agent. Detergent in toothpastes can release stable foam. Detergent that commonly use in toothpaste is sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS). SLS can denaturate oral tissue and irritate epidermal tissue if the concentration more than tolerance range. The other material that has same function as foaming agent is saponin, because saponin has stable foam. Avocado seed contains saponin that has a potential possibility to replace the SLS function as foaming agent. Purpose: The aim of this study was to know whether avocado seed can be applied as foaming agent in toothpaste. Method: This study was an experimental laboratory research. Toothpaste without foaming agent substance, tooth paste with avocado seed infusum, and toothpaste with SLS were experimented on horizontal brushing machine to know the difference of each other in releasing foam. The research was analyzed by Chi-Square test. Result: There were significant differences between three toothpastes. Toothpaste without foaming agent did not release foam, toothpaste with avocado seed infusum and toothpaste with SLS release stable foam. Conclusion: Avocado seed infusum can be applied as foaming agent in toothpaste
