Abstract

Background: The prevalence of malocclusion in Indonesia reached 80 % and in third position after caries and periodontal disease . Malocclusion can affect the aesthetic appearance of a person. Needs orthodontic treatment using fixed appliance increases, with increasing number of cases of malocclusion as oral health problems in Indonesia. The increased demand is not balanced with the level of public knowledge about orthodontic treatment. Objective: The study sample was 200 people wearing fixed orthodontic appliance includes 100 students and 100 general public. In this research, general public were Sales Promotion Girl (SPG). Measurement of knowledge used questionnaires knowledge of malocclusions and orthodontics that has been validated. Method: This type of research was a descriptive observational study using cross sectional approach. Results: The result showed that the test results using the Chi-square statistic at the 95% confidence interval with α = 0.05 showed significant relationship between the respondents' knowledge of the malocclusion with the attitude of the respondents in choosing a place of treatment in respondents SPG. Conclusions: Knowledge of the malocclusion and orthodontic are not particularly good at SPG respondents compared to respondents who already well Dentistry. SPG chose more general dentists and dental handyman while more FKG choosing orthodontic specialists. The selection of mounting maintenance reasons where fixed appliances on average respondents SPG is because of the cheap cost.
